Applying limnology to the management and restoration of urban lakes

The role of urban lake managers is typically considered to be one of simply restraining the loading of pollutants (sewage, fertilizers, harmful chemicals, etc.) into recipient lakes, and physically removing unwanted factors, such as invasive fish. However, as our understanding of limnology increases, there are also potential opportunities to refine and enrich urban lake management and restoration strategies. I will present recent work examining how concepts such as regime shift theory and improved biogeochemical understanding may help lake managers restore eutrophic systems featuring harmful algal blooms, or better predict the response of lakes to hydrological shifts resulting in higher or lower water levels. I will also explore the confounding effect that climate change may have on traditional lake management strategies, and discuss the inclusion of aquatic greenhouse gas emissions in municipal planning.
