IUCN EICAT standard launched

Managing the impacts of invasive alien species to protect biodiversity

Invasive alien species are one of the main causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. In order to prioritise management actions to protect native biodiversity, we need to know more about their impacts. For example, when resources are scarce, it makes sense to give priority to the management of alien species that have the most damaging impacts.

This is why the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has now launched the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT). EICAT is a simple and objective tool that classifies alien species by the severity and type of their known environmental impacts. The EICAT Authority is responsible for the development and implementation of EICAT. It currently consists of 11 international experts on biological invasions, including IGB scientists Dr. Thomas Evans and Prof. Jonathan Jeschke.
