By constructing the biodiversity science building together, FU and IGB aim to demonstrate how productive cooperation between university and non-university research facilities in Berlin can be. Together biodiversity can be strengthened and further developed in a building that not only will serve environmental research, but also meets strict guidelines for sustainable construction.

In order to achieve the desired high quality level "Gold" according to the assessment system for sustainable construction of federal buildings in Germany (BNB) in the laboratory building module, the submitted design for the planned building had to be convincing both in terms of urban development and design, as well as in fulfilling the principles of energy optimization and sustainable construction. It is intended to embody the theme of sustainability as an idea for the future, both scientifically and through its architecture.

The exhibition of all submissions to the architectural completion will be on display in the foyer of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Microbiology, Freie Universität Berlin, Königin-Luise-Straße 12–14, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. working days from May 30 through June 13, 2017.
