Nature-based solutions: How to foster ponds and pondscapes

PONDERFUL project provides large collection of open resources
Largely neglected and generally undervalued, ponds are actually remarkably important for biodiversity conservation. In the last four years, the EU-funded “PONDERFUL” project investigated how ponds can be used as nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate change adaptation.

Thanks to their abundance, heterogeneity, exceptional biodiversity inherent naturalness and biogeochemical potency, ponds play a crucial role in catchments, landscapes, and potentially at continental scale which is completely out of proportion to their small size.
“We are happy that we were able to raise science-based awareness for the beauty and ecological and societal relevance of this very unique type of waterbody”, says IGB scientist Dr. Thomas Mehner.
In the project, solution-oriented resources have been developed to foster and facilitate the use of ponds and pondscapes as NBS. These open resources are available in English and other languages (automated translations), can be freely downloaded and disseminated. The PONDERFUL YouTube channel hosts animation videos and technical webinars, while a technical handbook and policy guidance document can be found on the project website. Additionally, leaflets on the demo sites and information posters summarizing some of the key results are available. A set of four policy briefing notes provide a short version of some of the content from the policy guidance document and are available on the PONDERFUL information system.
