Long line: Test preparation on dry land

Fortunately, the IGB property is long enough: Scientist Christof Engelhardt from the working group Lake Physiks (Department of Ecohydrology) prepares the equipment for a planned measurement in the Stechlinsee. On a 65-meter-long rope, he attaches measuring probes at certain intervals. The probes will later measure the temperature and oxygen content of the water at various depths from the sea surface to the bottom.

The information obtained in this way provides indications on the seasonal changes in the lake stratification. Knowledge about such physical processes in lakes is an important basis for the evaluation of further experiments, e.g. the measurement of turbulence and the gas exchange between water and atmosphere.
