Lights off for the Earth Hour

Around the globe, millions of people are turning their lights off for one hour as a common symbol for environmental protection. This year, the global community action will take place on March, 25th 2017 at 8.30 pm.

The IGB coordinated network "Loss of the Night" invites to participate in the Earth Hour and to share experiences on facebook or twitter. As a suggestion for the Earth Hour, the project team has composed recommendations and ideas for young and old: By telling horror stories, enjoying a dinner in the dark or creating a shadow theatre it can be fun to spend one hour without light in the house. Outside one can observe stars and constellations, measure the sky quality or organise a mindful night walk.

The "Loss of the Night" network wants to increase public awareness for the value of natural darkness for humans and nature and for the problem of light pollution. The researchers do not advocate to completely turn off lights, but to use artificial light in a more sustainable way instead.
