Swimming, fishing, boating or paddling: How water-related leisure activities affect the ecological and chemical quality of lakes and rivers, their social importance and the possibility of cross-sectoral management are currently being investigated by IGB scientists in the two projects AQUATAG and RESI.

With its numerous lakes and wide waterways, Berlin is a water sports stronghold. The IGB researchers Marcus WildnerDaniela Pietras and Oliver Peters were therefore also present at the 5th Berlin Water Sports Festival in Berlin-Grünau with their scientific survey on recreational activities in inland waters. The survey is intended to show which factors are particularly important in terms of water quality and natural experience for the different users, and where the demand for those seeking relaxation is particularly high. The findings are intended to contribute to a holistic view of the performance of ecosystems and to integrate leisure activities into concepts for sustainable water use.
