Second place winner was Jenny Fabian with her publication on the microbial decomposition of terrestrial carbon in rivers and lakes. Her experiments with different carbon sources such as leaves, branches and soil material showed that the composition of the bacteria involved in the degradation varies widely depending on the material.
Andrea Fuchs, Ph.D. student in the research group "Microbial Ecology of Sediments", claimed the third place with her work on the relation between rising water temperatures and their effects on the concentration of greenhouse gas methane. Through experiments in Lake Stechlin and Lake Geneva, the scientist showed that a rise in the temperature of the lakes does not lead to an increased methane concentration in the sediments of the waters.
Vasco Elbrecht from the University Duisburg-Essen won the first price and thus secured the challenge cup "Clara".
