Computational Ecology

Group profile

The research focus of the Computational Ecology Group is community responses to environmental and ecological change with a particular focus on lakes. Using a combination of empirical data and mathematical models the aim of the group is to explore biotic and abiotic drivers of community change with a goal of forecasting the future of freshwater systems.

Key questions

  • How are communities changing in light of anthropogenic change and are there common drivers across different lake ecosystems?
  • How influential are biotic interactions and are certain interaction types more important for shaping community dynamics?
  • How do biotic drivers combine with multiple stressors such as eutrophication and chemical contaminants to alter community structure and ecosystem function?
  • How does within lake heterogeneity impact food web dynamics and ecosystem processes?
  • And how is this predicted to change as we progress into the Anthropocene?
