Assessing biodiversity change in Germany: the sMon project

Assessing past biodiversity change is often hindered by a lack-scale standardized monitoring data. This is also the case for most taxa in Germany, where most monitoring activities are separated by the federal structure. In the sMon project, we are working together with federal agencies, nature conservation groups and natural history societies across Germany to compile available data on species’ occurrences and abundance. In this talk, I will present some of our findings on the trends of plants and dragonflies over recent decades, and discuss some of our statistical approaches and remaining challenges of inferring trends from imperfect data.
