Zooplankton facing the global climate change: Old threats in the future of rising temperatures

Freshwater zooplankton is often under constant stress caused by cyanobacteria, pollution, invasive species (e.g. planktivorous fish), and recently climate warming is given much attention. The purpose of this presentation is to show the reactions of zooplankton to various stressors in different ecological contexts. The main focus will be on the role of temperature for life history patterns, influencing interactions between Daphnia spp. and filamentous cyanobacteria or shaping zooplankton communities. During this presentation results from laboratory experiments will be presented together with data from a unique system of lakes heated for over 50 years. These are a natural large scale experiment and can serve as a model of ecosystems functioning in the future of warmed climate.
