Extraordinary research project at the IGB: The environmental historian and nature writer Jessica J. Lee is currently investigating the literary and scientific history of Lake Stechlin. Her research is about human-environment relations and the transformation of nature into cultural landscapes. Inspired by her doctoral thesis, the Canadian author began to swim all year in lakes in and around Berlin. Her recently published first book Turning: A Swimming Memoir emerged from those experiences. Lee closely coorperates with IGB scientists to gain insights into current and historical water research at Lake Stechlin. By linking the scientific with the cultural history of the lake, she wants to get a new analytical perspective on the waters. Jessica J. Lee is financed by a fellowship from the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich.
