IGB researcher Nedim Tüzün receives MSCA grant from the EU

Postdoctoral researcher Nedim Tüzün's new research project ECO-EVO ALAN is funded by a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Fellowship. It focuses on how artificial light at night (ALAN) affects aquatic ecosystems, especially urban ponds. While the negative effects of ALAN on terrestrial ecosystems are well documented, there are still many unanswered questions about its effects on aquatic systems. The project will investigate how ALAN shapes the evolution of traits in zooplankton, focusing on water fleas.

Nedim Tüzün is particularly interested in the nocturnal migrations of the small animals in the water column and the possible effects on algal growth and the entire ecosystem of an urban pond. Since zooplankton feed on algae, disruption of this movement pattern by ALAN could lead to increased algal blooms and cause significant harm to animals and humans.

The European Union's Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship programme supports excellent research projects and helps young scientists to advance their research in an international and interdisciplinary environment.
