Researchers have been studying the evolution of sex chromosomes for about 100 years. Yet many aspects of sex development in vertebrates remain a mystery. No wonder – the methods of reproduction are incredibly diverse, and some can only now be detected thanks to novel molecular methods. Researchers led by Matthias Stöck from IGB and Lukáš Kratochvíl from the Czech Faculty of Science of the Charles University in Prague, together with an international team of experts, have summarised the knowledge and published it in two special issues of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B journal. The result is a unique scientific overview.
