Eurasian Beaver

  • Beavers are monogamous and often live with family members.
  • It is one of two extant species of the genus Castor, the other species is the North American beaver, Castor canadensis.
  • It is the third largest living rodent species, after the capybara and North American beaver.
  • Beavers feed on terrestrial deciduous tree parts and herbs but also on aquatic vegetation.
  • Its teeth contain iron which makes them very strong and gives them an orange colour.
  • Beavers can cut down a tree over 50 cm in diameter.
  • They are able to build dams to create ponds and wetlands.
  • Beavers were widespread in northern Eurasia but had been extirpated from many European countries due to hunting.
  • It has been reintroduced to many European countries that it was extirpated from.
