At almost 70 metres, the 400-hectare Lake Stechlin north of Berlin is one of the deepest lakes in northern Germany. For more than 60 years, IGB has operated a monitoring station at its deepest point. Physical, chemical and biological parameters are regularly recorded there. These long-term data help to document changes and to understand the processes within Lake Stechlin and other lakes – especially in times of climate change. The data collected also flow into national and worldwide lake monitoring networks, including projects of the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) and initiatives within the framework of Long-Term Ecosystem Research in Germany (LTER-D) and Europe (eLTER).
