Berlin Science Week | Underwater soundscapes

Hands-on activities at the IGB stand

What do you know about sounds under water?

Rain pattering, traffic roaring, a siren wailing - we are constantly surrounded by natural or anthropogenic noise. That's why researchers and artists are increasingly focusing on different sounds and soundscapes. And natural sounds are also being rediscovered in music and compositions. But what are the environmental impacts of sounds and how do they change over different time and space scales, for example in the air, in soils and even under water? Ecoacoustics deals with these questions. This relatively young field of research is ideal for a joint look by science and art.

Hands-on activities at our stand

Using various sounds under water, you can experience the power of sound (and all its counterparts such as noise, vibration and particle movement) at our stand and learn about concepts such as aurality, presence or immersion. For the creative, there is a suminagashi corner (Japanese painting technique on the water surface) and for the experimental, there is an underwater sound quiz.
