Leibniz Research Network on Biodiversity

The Leibniz Research Network Biodiversity (LFN) bundles and networks the expertise of 18 Leibniz institutions in the environmental, life, spatial, social and economic sciences. The scientists at the participating institutions record and explore the biological diversity of life and develop socially relevant solutions for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity through interdisciplinary research. Access to genetic resources and equitable benefit sharing (ABS) are also addressed. Equally, the LFN members are committed to the transfer of information for politics and society in order to raise awareness of the progressive loss of biodiversity and to strengthen the overall appreciation of biodiversity in society. Another unique feature are the natural science research museums, whose biological collections contain a total of more than 70 million collection items and thus offer a unique knowledge base for biodiversity research.

As a founder member, IGB chaired the research alliance from 2008 to 2014. Since then, we have been concentrating on incorporating our expertise in the field of freshwater biodiversity in the alliance, particularly on the topic of coupling aquatic and terrestrial systems.
